A Wayne Rooney inspired Manchester United brushed aside a poor Wigan

Alex Ferguson will enjoy his 68th birthday today after the easiest win his Manchester United team are likely to have all season. Overawed by the reputation, as much as the quality of the opposition, Wigan hardly made a tackle all night, subsiding feebly to a morale-sapping defeat engineered by the player they sold to United, Antonio Valencia. The winger from Ecuador was the man of the match, his surging incursions and crosses from the right flank setting up three of the goals before he added the fifth himself.

Wayne Rooney delivered another masterclass as Wigan meekly surrendered to Manchester United for the second time this season.

Alex Ferguson has argued for years that if his side are within touching distance of top spot on New Year's Day they will take some stopping.

A flurry just beforehand had involved Chris Kirkland turning a Rooney blockbuster wide and Paul Scharner booting a Nemanja Vidic effort of the line.

Following that, Rooney's audacious shot from the most acute angle imaginable bounced back to Kirkland off the far post, the Wigan keeper having been completely bamboozled by the initial effort.

Finally, Dimitar Berbatov, who had started the bombardment by racing onto Rooney's through ball and getting chopped down in the box by Titus Bramble without winning a penalty, failed with a chip when he was clean through.

At that stage, there might have been a temptation for Wigan to think they would survive..

It will not cross Ferguson's attention that much but an entire nation of football watchers is following his main man at the moment, crossing their fingers he can deliver World Cup glory to England.

Undoubtedly he is having his best season and it was the former Everton striker who stole in at the near post to meet Rafael Da Silva's cross and steer it past Kirkland to break the deadlock.

Three minutes later Michael Carrick swept home the second after Valencia had shown enough vision to cut a pass back into his path rather than drill a cross into crowded penalty area.

Team Line-up:

Manchester United: Kuszczak, Rafael Da Silva, Brown, Vidic (Anderson 68'), Evra (Fabio 69'), Valencia, Carrick, Fletcher, Park, Berbatov (Wellbeck 68'), Rooney.

Wigan Athletic: Kirkland (Pollit 45'), Melchiot, Boyce, Bramble, Figueroa, Gomez, Thomas (Edman 71'), Cho, Scharner, N'Zogbia (Sinclair 68'), Rodallega.

Arsenal seriously compete for the title in Premiere League

Abou Diaby struck twice as Arsenal maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with an emphatic 4-1 win over Portsmouth at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The Frenchman sidefooted in after 18 minutes and swept home another soon afterwards as ArsĆØne Wenger’s side produced some sublime football in the first half.

They were pegged back by a header from Younes Kaboul just before the interval but a freak goal from William Gallas, his third in three games this term, and fourth from substitute Aaron Ramsey completed a satisfying afternoon for ArsĆØne Wenger.

It was the sign of things to come in the first 15 minutes – incessant Arsenal pressure but without real focus. Arshavin rolled a shot wide in the ninth minute and the home side forced a flurry of corners but David James should have been called into greater action before Arsenal took the lead in the 18th minute.

Eduardo collected the ball on the left, nudged it one side of Marc Wilson then cheekily raced around the other side to collect near the byline. The striker steadied himself before rolling a pass into the path of the onrushing Diaby, who sidefooted a powerful shot into the roof of the net. It was inventive, incisive Arsenal at their best.

Team Line-up:

Portsmouth:
Begovic, Finnan, Kaboul, Ben-Haim, Hreidarsson, Yebda, Mokoena (Vanden Borre '58), Hughes (Brown '90), Belhadj, Boateng (Kanu '71), Piquionne

Arsenal:
Almunia, Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, Traore, Ramsey, Song Billong, Diaby, Nasri (Eastmond '85), Eduardo (Rosicky '72), Arshavin (Vela '82)

Fernando Torres struck in stoppage time to give Liverpool a desperately needed win

Fernando Torres struck in stoppage time to give Liverpool a desperately needed 1-0 win at Aston Villa in the Premier League on Tuesday.

A flat game was heading for a goalless draw until ragged Villa defending allowed the ball to slip into Torres's path and he calmly placed a low shot beyond Brad Friedel.

The Spaniard's predatory finish was his 50th league goal in 72 matches -- the quickest a Liverpool player has reached that tally - and was the only memorable moment from a poor game.

The win lifts Liverpool into seventh place on 33 points -- one place and two points behind Villa.

Chelsea top the standings with 45 points from 20 games. Manchester United, who host Wigan Athletic on Wednesday, are second on 40 from 19 with Arsenal third on 38 from 18 ahead of their game at Portsmouth, also on Wednesday.

Villa and Liverpool, their players perhaps chilled by relentless snow, were below par in a low-key contest.

Villa, having beaten Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United this season, were denied a big four clean sweep by Sunday's 3-0 loss at Arsenal and that perhaps had a chastening effect as they were cautious from the start on Tuesday.

Team Line-up:

Aston Villa: Friedel, Luke Young, Cuellar, Dunne, Warnock, Reo-Coker (Albrigthon 72'), Milner, Petrov, Downing (Sidwell 79'), Agbonlahor, Carew.

Liverpool: Reina, Johnson (Skrtel 88'), Carragher, Agger, Insua, Kuyt, Lucas, Aquilani (Babel 77'), Benayoun (Aurelio 93'), Gerrard, Torres.

The victory means Chelsea will lead the Premier League

There was no sophistication to a Chelsea victory in which the uncontainable individualism of Didier Drogba brought an equaliser and the winner arrived through an own-goal from Chris Smalling. This type of win will not have been what Roman Abramovich had in mind when he hired Carlo Ancelotti as manager but it was still a heartening recovery.

With Fulham still reeling from losing their lead, the hosts fired another ball into the box and when Daniel Sturridge's shot was parried by Schwarzer it hit the unfortunate Chris Smalling and rolled agonisingly into the back of the net. Fulham pressed again after falling behind and some uncharacteristically nervous defending from Chelsea made it a nail-biting finish for the Blues fans.

The victory means Chelsea will lead the Premier League at the end of 2009 but they still look well short of their best form, while Fulham suffer their first defeat in nine games.

City to Thevez : Fantastic The Argentinian

Two goals from Carlos Tevez and a Javier Garrido free-kick earned Manchester City their first away win in four months - and their second victory in three days under new boss Roberto Mancini - against Wolves at Molineux.
Carlos Tevez scored twice as Manchester City strolled to a 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium this evening.
City boss Roberto Mancini changed his tactics to try and counteract Wolves, matching up to Mick McCarthy's 4-4-2 formation and pushing Bellamy up top alongside Tevez.
Minutes later the combination resulted in the first goal of the game. Bellamy made a good run into the left channel and was slipped through, he pulled the ball back to Tevez, who had checked his run – standing near the penalty spot. The Argentinian struck the ball first time with his left foot, his shot took a fortunate deflection off Craddock, squirming beyond Marcus Hahnemann into the Wolves goal: 1-0 to Manchester City.
City extended their lead in the 69th minute with a stunning effort, substitute Javier Garrido stepped up to take a free-kick with 25 yards on the left. Striking the ball with his left-foot, the Spaniard curled the ball around the blind side of the wall and into the bottom left-hand corner of the net: 2-0 to Manchester City.
City scored a third in the 86th minute, with Tevez scoring his second of the game. Robinho came off the bench to assist, crossing the ball from the right, Tevez collected the ball on the edge of the box and moved to his left. He then smashed the ball back across goal into the bottom right-hand corner: 3-0 to Manchester City, as the Argentinian scored his eighth goal in seven games.

Cesc Fabregas inspire Arsenal

Cesc Fabregas came off the bench to inspire Arsenal to a 3-0 win over Villa to drag themselves back into the Barclays Premier League title race.

The Spaniard, who had been out with a hamstring problem, netted a superb free-kick on 65 minutes and then a fine breakaway goal before being substituted as a precaution, with Abou Diaby scoring a third in stoppage-time.

Meanwhile, Arsenal added a goal by Abou Diaby was born. With this result Arsenal are now collected a total of 38 points or one point ahead of Chelsea, who will play the game Hull City counter shortly.

Wayne Rooney rescued Manchester United

WAYNE Rooney rescued Manchester United after almost playing the Barclays Premier League champions.

Rooney gave United the lead in first-half stoppage time at the KC Stadium but then gifted Hull a route back with the mistake that led to Craig Fagan's penalty equaliser.

Although the time seemed disappointed with the mistakes he made, but the MU player's numbered ten back in control of himself and turn disappointment into a force to rise.

Rooney plays a major role in the presence of two additional goals that eventually led forces Old Trafford to win 3-1.

Birmingham Inhibit Chelsea

It was Chelsea who were left with the blues after the battle thereof, dropping two more priceless points in a dangerous mid-season hiatus: they have only one win in their past seven matches in all competitions. The league leaders, who failed to score for the first time in 34 games, are increasingly vulnerable to Manchester United, whose trip to Hull today has the look of a gimme.

Birmingham, in contrast, are on the up and up – the division's form team with 17 points from their past seven games. They are unbeaten in their past 10, and would have claimed another notable scalp yesterday but for an erroneous offside decision which robbed Christian "Chucho" BenĆtez of what should have been the winner.

In fairness, defeat would have been hard on Chelsea, who created the lion's share of the scoring chances and were ultimately denied by a man-of-the-match performance from Joe Hart, who looked every inch the England goalkeeper in waiting. Alex McLeish, the manager at St Andrew's, said afterwards that he would love to make Hart, who is on loan from Manchester City, his first signing in January.

Birmingham's new owner, Carson Yeung, is committed to making "substantial" funds available, and McLeish's record in the market to date should get him whatever he wants – within reason.

West Ham United 2-0 Portsmouth FT

Full time - Dan Lee Probert took action to close and the players make their way to a festive farewell from West Ham fans. Was tense and nervous at times, but in the end West Ham could and probably should have more. Win lifted West Ham out of the bottom three for now and will give a big lift before the London derby with Tottenham Hotspur in two days.

Burnley 1-1 Bolton Wanderers

Bolton took another chink out of Burnley's Turf Moor armour by snatching a point in the first meeting between the two sides in the top flight since 1964. But more significantly for the frustrated Bolton manager, Gary Megson, another defensive lapse prompted the draw that left his club stuck in the relegation zone.

Matthew Taylor had curled a free-kick inside the near post to put Bolton ahead in the 29th minute with a goal described as "exquisite" by Megson's opposite number, Owen Coyle. But the lead only lasted until the 56th minute when David Nugent headed in an equaliser that infuriated Megson.

"Bolton are an established Premier League club, they know how to grind out results," Coyle said. "But I think they'll know today they've been in a real game and I think in an honest assessment, they'll feel fortunate to leave with a point."

Mancini's first touch

Roberto Mancini made a winning start as Manchester City manager as the Blues put a rocky few days behind them by beating Stoke.

Martin Petrov and Carlos Tevez supplied the first-half goals that marked Mancini's coronation.

Yet the Italian would also have been aware it took two brilliant Shay Given saves, the first to deny Tuncay when the sides were still deadlocked, and another to turn away a ferocious James Beattie effort when the visitors were enjoying their best spell, for City to consolidate their place in the top six - and edge to within three points of third.

Even for a club as well versed in shooting themselves in the foot as City, it has been a pretty torrid week.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Wolverhampton, got up now The Red?

Entertain Hull in the English League continued at the Emirates Stadium, Saturday (19/12/2009) , Arsenal managed to win with a score of 3-0. But three goals in the game can not easily granted by the host.

Chelsea 2-1 Portsmouth: Lampard late penalty

Frank Lampard scored a late penalty to give Chelsea a 2-1 win over last-place Portsmouth that restored their three-point lead at the top of the English Premier League.
Chelsea looked to be heading for a fifth game without a win until defender Mark Wilson was penalised for a foul on Branislav Ivanovic and Lampard hit the resulting penalty past goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Chelsea have 40 points to defending champion Manchester United's 37, and eight more than third-place Arsenal, who drew 1-1 at Burnley.

Manchester City 4-3 Sunderland: Hughes farewell

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has been sacked after the club's super-rich Arab owners lost patience with an erratic English Premier League campaign.

The axe fell after the Welshman had overseen a 4-3 home win over Sunderland, leaving the pitch with a wave to all four sides of the Eastlands ground.

Italian Roberto Mancini was immediately named his successor.

Former Inter Milan coach Mancini, who watched the victory from the stands at the City of Manchester Stadium, will be expected to produce a title challenge by next season at the latest after taking over from Hughes, who replaced Sven-Goran Eriksson at the world's richest club last year.

City, whose victory was only their second in their last 11 league matches, are sixth in the standings and still firmly in the hunt for a top four finish this term.

They are also in the League Cup semi-finals where they will play Manchester United over two legs.

'Not in line'

"A return of two wins in 11 Premier League games is clearly not in line with the targets that were agreed and set," City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said in a statement on Saturday.

"(Owner) Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Board felt that there was no evidence that the situation would fundamentally change.

"A return of two wins in 11 Premier League games is clearly not in line with the targets that were agreed and set"

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak
"This is a particularly difficult announcement given the personal investment over the past 15 months on all sides and we would like to put on record our respect for and thanks to Mark Hughes and we wish him the best in his future career."

Hughes enjoyed a glittering playing career as a striker with Manchester United, Barcelona and Chelsea before moving into coaching by taking charge of Wales and narrowly missing out on qualification for the Euro 2004 finals.

He furthered his reputation at Blackburn Rovers where in his four years at Ewood Park they regularly challenged for European qualification and reached three FA Cup semi-finals.

City finished 10th in Hughes' first season at the helm but after spending $186.4 million on six big signings in the close season, fuelled by the petro-dollars of the club's Abu Dhabi owner, expectations went through the roof.

With the likes of Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz, Gareth Barry and Kolo Toure added to the squad, City were tipped as top-four contenders.

Even the dream of a first league title since 1968 seemed possible when they began the campaign with four consecutive wins, including a 4-2 home victory over Arsenal.

Portsmouth 2-0 Liverpool: Miserable season

Liverpool's miserable season hit a new low as Javier Mascherano was sent off in the defeat at Fratton Park.

Algerian defender Nadir Belhadj rifled in an unstoppable volley in the first half before Frederic Piquionne capped a good afternoon for Portsmouth manager Avram Grant late on.

Rafael Benitez's side, who are already out of the European Champions League, have won just four of their last 17 matches in all competitions and face a desperate fight to salvage a place in the English Premier League's top four.

The Reds, who are five points adrift of fourth place ahead of Saturday's later games, fell behind in the 33rd minute when Belhadj lashed a ferocious shot past Jose Reina from a tight angle for his first goal of the season.

That strike was the 500th in the Premier League this season and Liverpool defender Daniel Agger should have added to that tally, but wasted his side's best chance when he headed over from close range.

A dismal day for Liverpool got even worse when Argentine midfielder Mascherano was dismissed by referee Lee Mason for a lunge on Tal Ben Haim just before half time.

French striker Piquionne piled on the misery for Liverpool boss Benitez, who is certain to face more heavy criticism after this defeat, when he finished off a Kevin-Prince Boateng move in the 82nd minute with another angled volley.

Portsmouth, celebrating their second win under Grant, move level on points with second bottom West Ham, but remain behind the Hammers on goals scored.
