**Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale blew the Barclays Premier League title race open with goals against Chelsea - and also put Tottenham back in the Champions League places.

Defoe tucked away from the penalty spot for his 24th of the season after John Terry handled in the area, then Bale followed up his midweek goal against Arsenal with another before the break at White Hart Lane.

Terry was also cautioned midway through the second half for bringing down Pavlyuchenko from behind when the Russian was running at goal.

He got his marching orders 23 minutes from full-time, with his second foul on Bale.

Bentley almost added another but his cheeky lob was tipped over by Cech and there was also time for Gomes to deny Drogba from close range and for Lampard to pull one back in stoppage time.

**Tottenham Hotspur won their FA Cup dress rehearsal against Portsmouth with consummate ease, easing to a 2-0 victory at White Hart Lane.

Goals from Pompey old-boys Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar secured a routine victory for Harry Redknapp's men, who continued their quest for Champions League football in ruthless style.

Spurs are now five points clear in fourth and have just seven matches left to clinch a place in Europe's premier competition - and a fifth straight victory in the league has given them the best chance they can hope for.

Time is running out for bottom club Pompey, but they began with a tenacity that seemed to stun Spurs - Anthony Vanden Borre came agonisingly close to opening the scoring on 18 minutes, but Heurelho Gomes came out on top in their one-on-one battle.

Vanden Borre was made to pay for his profligacy as Crouch stooped to nod Gareth Bale's excellent cross past David James on 27 minutes.

In fairness, they did impose themselves on the hosts in the second half, but the lack of a cutting edge in front of goal was there for all to see.

Crouch went close late on but fired wide, but it mattered little as Spurs had this one won in the first half.

**A controversial Jermain Defoe goal and two late Roman Pavlyuchenko strikes gave Tottenham a 3-0 victory over Wigan Athletic and moved back into fourth place in the Premier League on goal difference.

The match began slightly later than planned after Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland noticed a hole in the netting of his goal, once the game was underway the state of the pitch made it difficult for both sides to play free flowing football.

The first chance of the match fell to David Bentley in the 15th minute, after a patient Tottenham build-up Wilson Palacios found Bentley. The midfielder flicked the ball up and volleyed at goal but his effort went straight at Chris Kirkland.

Spurs controversially took the lead in the 26th minute thanks to England striker Defoe. Referee Alan Wiley played an excellent advantage after Bentley was fouled in the center of the pitch by Hendry Thomas; the ball came to Niko Kranjcar who laid the ball into the path of Gareth Bale. The overlapping full-back delivered a low cross which was tapped home by Defoe from what looked like an offside position. Television replays confirmed the striker was at least two yards offside but the assistant referee’s flag remained down and Defoe grabbed his 22nd goal of the season.

The remainder of the half continued to be a scrappy affair with neither side testing the opposition goalkeeper. Bale and Defoe were both lucky to get away unpunished for what appeared to be dangerous two footed lunges at Mario Melchiot and Gary Caldwell respectively, however both teams went into half time with eleven men and Spurs with a one goal advantage.

In the 55th minute Roberto Martinez introduced substitute Victor Moses for Hendry Thomas and three minutes later the new signing tested Heurelho Gomes, the young midfielder got the ball out of his feet but could only shoot straight at the Tottenham goalkeeper.

On the hour mark Defoe nearly scored his 7th goal against Wigan this season. A neat pass from Kranjcar found Defoe in the right hand side of the penalty area, he skipped past Scharner and fired a powerful strike straight at Kirkland who made a comfortable save.

Wigan continued to go in search of an equalizer and in the 65th minute created another half chance, Marcelo Moreno found Charles N’Zogbia on the left side of the penalty area, however the Frenchman’s curling left foot shot sailed over the bar without testing Gomes.

With 18 minutes to play Defoe broke away inside the Wigan half, he cut in off the left wing before sliding a through ball for Peter Crouch but the his strike partner was unable to get on the end of the pass and the ball rolled into the arms of Kirkland. That was the final action of the match for Defoe who was replaced by Pavlyuchenko.

A mazy run by Modric in the 77th minute through the center of the pitch created an excellent chance for Crouch. The England striker took the ball into the penalty area but his shot was well saved by Kirkland who was keeping his side in the match.

With ten minutes to play Mistake by Gomes goes unpunished, shot by McCArthy was fumbled by the Brazilian goalkeeper but substitute Scott Sinclair was unable to turn the loose ball into the back of the net.

In the 82nd minute Tottenham were denied a second goal by the Wigan woodwork. Modric found David Bentley inside the penalty area, he took his time before returning the ball to the Croatian who’s right foot shot struck the post before rebounding into the arms of Kirkland.

A minute later Tottenham did double their lead thanks to Pavlyuchenko. The impressive Modric jinked through two Wigan tackles and found Pavlyuchenko who controlled the ball with his right foot before stroking it past Kirkland with his left.

Two minutes into injury time Pavlyuchenko grabbed his second goal and Spurs’ third, Kirkland spilt a free kick into the Russian’s path and he managed to turn the ball into the back of the net and secure the point for Spurs.

**When Bolton Wanderers travel to White Hart Lane for an FA Cup 5th round replay neither of these sides will want, Tottenham are unlikely to hold out much hope of sneaking through on a penalty shoot-out.

Tom Huddlestone, drafted in to replace Jermain Defoe on spot-kick duties after the striker had missed six of his last 10 attempts, passed a simple effort straight at Jussi Jaaskelainen, spurning the chance to kill the tie after Defoe had equalised Kevin Davies’s opener.

Such is Tottenham’s luck at the Reebok Stadium. Spurs have won just once here - in the Carling Cup - since Bolton relocated here. That they do not enjoy their trips up the M61 was evidenced by a first half in which Owen Coyle’s side overpowered, overran their more illustrious guests.

Johan Elmander saw one effort blocked by Vedran Corluka in the opening exchanges, Zat Knight sliced wildly after Spurs failed to clear a Paul Robinson free kick. Elmander would go one better, though, ballooning an effort when Ricardo Gardner’s clever through ball had left him with just Heurelho Gomes to beat.

The Swedish striker, at £9 million Bolton’s record signing, became a cross for Coyle’s predecessor, Gary Megson, to bear, his very presence seemingly confirming his wastefulness, his failure to use what resources he had correctly.

But here, Elmander at least offered glimpses of what made him so coveted in his time at Toulouse. It was his charge, his one-two with the ever-excellent Chung-Yong Lee, which created Davies’s opening goal after a move comprising 17 passes, and it was he who was at the heart of Bolton’s surge to extend their lead after the break. Twice they went close, twice Elmander was at the heart of the moves.

The scare seemed to galvanise the visitors. Tottenham’s much-vaunted attacking quartet, conspicuous by their absence for much of the opening hour, suddenly clicked into gear. Twice in little more than 60 seconds Redknapp’s side hit the bar, first as Peter Crouch beat Jussi Jaaskelainen to Defoe’s chipped cross, then when Paul Robinson stumbled onto Wilson Palacios’s cut-back and contrived to clip the ball over Jaaskelainen.

The warning signs, certainly, were there. Spurs, so anaemic before the break, matched Bolton’s commitment, both sides pouring forward. David Bentley, for once foregoing his repertoire of unnecessary, pointless step-overs, launched a heat-seeker which only narrowly evaded Defoe. The striker, tacitly criticised by his manager before this game, looked pained at his failure to judge the flight of the pass. A moment later, he would not be so profligate.

Bale, impressive on the left, scampered down the touchline, eased past Gretar Steinsson, sauntered into the box and picked out Defoe, inexplicably unmarked on the penalty spot. One touch to set himself, little or no backlift, and a fearsome, fizzing, rising drive past Jaaskelainen. Spurs, in the ascendancy, had ample opportunity to settle the tie.

Jaaskelainen dived at full stretch to deny substitute Niko Kranjcar, Palacios rocketed a left-footed effort just over. Then Crouch, indulging in a little light ball-juggling, dancing towards goal, found Sam Ricketts’ outstretched arm, Phil Dowd pointed to the spot and Huddlestone, replacing Defoe, found himself with the best chance of all. The Finn, low to his right, pushed his weak effort away.

Leeds United 1-3 Hotspur : A hattrick from Jermain Defoe

A hat-trick from Jermain Defoe ensured Spurs avoided an FA Cup exit at the hands of giant-killers Leeds United at Elland Road.

The Whites had eliminated Manchester United at Old Trafford in the previous round, and a last-minute penalty from Jermaine Beckford earned them a replay from the first leg of this tie at White Hart Lane.

However, a solid Tottenham performance - and three goals from a wasteful Defoe who could, and should have had five or six - held off a Leeds side who had their spells of pressure but were ultimately second best.

Having missed several earlier chances, including one excellent one-on-one with United goalkeeper Casper Ankergren, Defoe opened the scoring when his mishit shot from a David Bentley cross skewed into the top corner.

But the goal brought the home side to life and they pressed their Premier League opponents back immediately.

Their reward was a swift response in the shape of Luciano Becchio, who was on hand to turn home the rebound after Jermaine Beckford's toe-poked shot was well saved by Heurelho Gomes on the stroke of half-time.

Spurs continued to dominate in the second half and only a string of good saves from Ankergren and the wastefulness of Defoe up front kept the scores level.

The diminutive England man was unlucky to be flagged offside with about 20 minutes left after turning home Gareth Bale's cross from just past the last defender.

But it wasn't long until another chance came his way - Jermaine Jenas fed Bentley wide on the right and his low cross was met by Defoe on the edge of the six-yard box for a 2-1 lead.

During the final 15 minutes Leeds threatened only once, when a Jonathan Howson header went narrowly over.

But it was Spurs that looked the more likely to score again, and so it proved as, with men committed upfield, Defoe broke clear, rounded Ankergren and slotted home to seal victory.

After the Hull draw at the Lane, we said that it was the inability to beat lesser sides at home that could be our Achilles heel this season, as opposed to the dropping of valuable points in the last minute that blighted our push for fourth spot in the Lasagna-poisoning season under Martin Jol. Since then, those problems from a few seasons ago have reared their ugly head again to put a spanner in the works of our push for the holy grail of UEFA Champions League football.

With Liverpool and Aston Villa both winning as Spurs moved into added time at St Andrews, we simply had to keep our concentration to the death and see out the final few minutes for what would have been a wonderful win against one of the hardest sides to beat in the Premier League. Instead, we are left again to wonder what might have been and what may be due to our slack play when it mattered most.

Spurs had earned their lead with a gritty and productive second-half display and the danger coming the other way had been minimal. Yet one moment tempers so much that had been so good. David Bentley looked like the player we expected to have signed, Wilson Palacios is showing the form that we saw this time last season and Gareth Bale is putting in the sort of displays expected of a huge prospect. Add to that the return to form of Luka Modric and Jermain Defoe finishing clinically again and there was so much to look forwards to.

Now, Spurs face a tricky trip to Leeds that should have been avoided when the sides first met before a massive match at home to one of our biggest rivals in the table – Aston Villa. These are not the games you need to go into having worries about whether you can hold on to any lead you manage to acquire in the first 89 minutes. Spurs need to snap out of this worrying trend and quickly before it kills a second push for a top-four finish.

Spurs tried to play on the counterattack towards the end of the game, particularly after Dawson’s flawed offside plan allowed Benitez to run clear only for him to dally at the vital moment. But we seemed to have done enough until the dreaded injury time moment when Jerome read the flight of a deep cross better than King and headed across goal for Ridgewell, who exposed the sleeping Corluka to prod in the equaliser.

David Bentley enjoyed a rare night of success to help Tottenham Hotspur hold on to fourth place in the Premier League.

Goals from Peter Crouch and David Bentley eased Tottenham to a 2-0 win over Fulham at White Hart Lane.
Spurs deservedly took the lead in the 27th minute when England striker Crouch tapped home a Luka Modric cross.

The home side dominated proceedings but were denied by Mark Schwarzer in the Fulham goal.

That result meant Spurs are now a clear victory ahead of the team from Merseyside, who are fifth and continuing to struggle for consistency.

Fulham, for their part, suggested only intermittently that they might deny Redknapp's men three points, a haul they had not managed since 28 December, when West Ham were defeated here.

Fulham rarely threatened the Spurs goal and took 50 minutes to have a shot on target.

The win sees Tottenham move three points clear in fourth place in the Premier League table. Fulham remain in ninth.

Boaz Myhill was the hero for Hull City as they secured a goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane that moves them out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The Tigers goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to deny Spurs three points on Harry Redknapp's 500th mach as a manager in the Premier League and move his team above West Ham United and Bolton Wanderers, who both play on Sunday.

Tottenham needed the three points against the side they beat 5-1 back in August, as they are about to embark on a difficult run in which they will face Liverpool, Fulham, Birmingham and Aston Villa, while the Tigers hoped to move themselves out of the bottom three ahead of their trip to Old Trafford.

Neither side had played a game for two weeks, and the match began in somewhat sluggish fashion. In fact, it was not until the 38th minute that the game saw its first shot on target.

Wilson Palacios drilled a shot from the corner of the penalty area and Myhill palmed it away. Robbie Keane was lurking in the box and pounced on the loose ball, but Myhill was back in his feet quickly to tip the Irishman's strike over the bar.

The Hull keeper made another important save deep in first-half injury time, when Keane dummied Luka Modric's through ball for Jermain Defoe. The England striker, who had barely seen the ball up until that point, toe-poked a shot right at the on-rushing Myhill, who turned the ball behind for a corner.
